Authorities in the Australian state of New South Wales on Tuesday ordered the evacuation of more than 40,000 people from their homes, while warnings of a possible evacuation of 300,000 others were issued due to the worst floods in decades.

The American “ABC” network stated that the authorities warned citizens not to flee to the rooftops, which could lead to their detention there due to the high water level, noting that more than 50 people were rescued who were stuck on a bridge after the roads leading to it were flooded.

The floods are moving south from the state of “Queensland” to “New South Wales” in one of the worst environmental disasters, which has so far killed nine people.
