Australian opposition: China and Solomon Islands deal makes Australia less safe

Australia news- The opposition in Australia reiterated its opposition to the recent China and Solomon Islands agreement, claiming that it poses a danger to the country.

Queensland's deputy opposition leader Richard Marles said the deal made Australia "less safe" and criticized the federal government's actions with Pacific nations.

"They let the Pacific go, and they oversaw it, they succeeded in not making Australia a favored ally of the Solomon Islands," he added.

"This agreement increases the possibility of a Chinese military presence in the region, which makes Australia less safe."

When asked about the speech he gave in China, Marlis replied that his speech was a compliment only because he was in Chinese territory, and that it was directed at the government and carries clear criticism of its government.

Marles challenged a government minister to publicly criticize China on its soil, as he did.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has defended his Pacific policy, saying that the Solomon Islands is a sovereign country that can choose its own decisions, and China puts "strengths and weaknesses" in the Pacific countries.
