“AssangeDAO” Divided by two words:
“DAO” It means a decentralized autonomous organization.
“Assange” He is the famous Australian journalist “Julian Assange” who is behind the famous “WikiLeaks” platform that leaked many secret documents of officials, ministers and presidents from around the world.
Assange was arrested in 2021 and negotiations are underway for his extradition to the United States of America.
This made many free speech advocates call for his release and non-extradition and the establishment of “AssangeDAO”.
Therefore, AssangeDAO is dedicated to restoring Assange’s freedom. The organization began fundraising on February 3.
Less than a week later, it ended its effort after it managed to collect 17,422 Ethers from 10,000 users.
Helping the beleaguered WikiLeaks founder:
The newly formed AssangeDAO’s mission was to raise enough funds to help Julian Assange.
It was aiming to get ETH in exchange for the governance token “JUSTICE” to bid on 1/1 NFT.
The NFT in question was prepared by well-known digital artist Buck in collaboration with Assange.
The proceeds collected from its sale are expected to benefit Assange’s defense fund in terms of legal fees and campaigns to raise awareness of the issue of his extradition.
Earlier, the decentralized independent organization AssangeDAO raised over $38 million in Ethereum by February 7 before adding nearly $15 million in another two days.
Among the many notable contributions, AssangeDAO raised about $31,000, or 10 ETH, from Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, which Köppelmann co-founder and CEO revealed about contributing 10 ETH to the movement last week.
AssangeDAO was inspired by FreeRossDAO, which was created to free up a website builder running on the dark web, and ended up raising $12 million.
In 2021, the WikiLeaks founder lost a major legal battle after a British court ruled that he could be extradited to the United States to face trial over the publication of hundreds of thousands of classified military documents and diplomatic cables in 2010 and 2011.
In great relief to the Australian citizen, the UK Supreme Court has ruled that Assange will be able to appeal a decision to extradite him to the US on spying charges, where he faces a 175-year prison sentence.
Assange can now appeal to the country’s Supreme Court.
